Denture padding in the UK

Denture padding in the UK

You experience discomfort when wearing your denture. Rest assured you don't necessarily need to replace it straight away. Often, a denture relining in the UK is enough. And whether exactly it is and how much it costs - read our article.

Denture padding - what is it?

Denture padding is a dental procedure that aims to improve the fit of the denture to the patient's gums. It involves adding a new layer of material (usually acrylic) to the inner surface of the denture.

This ensures that the prosthesis adheres better to the ground, which increases wearing comfort and improves functionality.

Denture padding is for people who use full or partial dentures and are experiencing discomfort due to a poor fit. This treatment is particularly beneficial for:

  • older patients, in whom the natural changes in the oral cavity are more pronounced
  • people who have lost a lot of bone mass after tooth extraction
  • patients suffering from gum disease that affects the shape of the gums
  • people who experience regular irritation or wounds caused by wearing dentures.
The image shows a dentist presenting a virtual denture to a patient on a large screen. The dentist, an elderly man with a grey beard, sits and watches the presentation while his colleague, a younger man in a white apron and wearing gloves, holds the instructions and explains the procedure for fitting the denture. The medical logo is visible in the foreground.

Indications for padding

If you wear a denture and for some reason it makes you uncomfortable (becomes loose or uncomfortable) it is best to make an appointment as soon as possible. Similarly, if it is causing irritation and sores in your mouth.

Denture padding is a good solution if you have problems with its stability because it ensures that it stays in place better. It also extends the life of your denture before a new one is needed.

Subconstruction may also be necessary in cases of loss of bone mass or gum disease

What does the lining of a denture look like?

As with other medical procedures, this begins with a consultation. During this, the dentist will assess the condition of your mouth and the fit of your current denture. Based on this, he or she will decide whether padding is necessary.

The prosthesis will then be cleaned and prepared for lining. Sometimes a cavity impression is necessary to precisely fit the new layer.

The next stage is the application of the new material: A new material (usually acrylic) is applied to the inner surface of the denture, which is then cured. This process can be done on site at the dentist's office or sent to a prosthetic laboratory.

The final stage is to fit and finishing. Once your treatment is complete, you will be given recommendations for the care of your denture and dates for your next follow-up appointments.
