Acrylic dentures in the UK - indications
Acrylic dentures are removable prosthetic restorations. This means that they are fitted and removed by the patient. They are most commonly used in cases of complete edentulousness or large missing teeth.
For many people, aesthetic considerations are an important argument, but so is an improved quality of life. With a denture, they can return to eating their favourite foods, which they had to give up due to missing teeth.
The health aspect is also not insignificant. If some teeth are missing, the remaining teeth can move. As a consequence, this can lead to periodontal changes or tooth loss. Chewing function is also impaired, resulting in ulcers and digestive problems. On top of this, headaches, changes in the temporomandibular joint and even in the appearance of the face can occur.
Types of acrylic dentures
We can divide acrylic dentures into partial and full dentures. In both cases, they can be made for one of the dental arches or for both.
Partial acrylic dentures use is used when the patient still has some of their own teeth. Comprehensive in the case of complete edentulousness.
The dentures are made of pink acrylic imitating gums, just like teeth, but their colour is matched to the rest of the dentition (if the patient still has some of his or her teeth) or selected individually for the patient.
In our office acrylic dentures are made of high-impact grade acrylic, thus not only allowing patients to restore their comfort and improve their appearance, but are also much more resistant to fracture, breakage, plaque build-up and discolouration.

What is the process of making a prosthesis?
The fabrication of acrylic dentures in the UK begins with a consultation with a prosthodontist. During your appointment, your dentist will suggest a specific prosthetic solution depending on your oral condition.
It is possible that before the prosthesis is made dental treatment or removal of remaining teeth in the mouth will be necessary. However, this is decided by the dentist after the aforementioned visit.
The next stage involves taking an impression. At the next appointment, the doctor determines the height of the bite, as well as the width and colour of the teeth. A trial denture is then prepared. Once they are accepted by the patient, the actual acrylic denture is made.
Fabrication of a complete acrylic prosthesis requires approximately 5 visits, partial 4. However, these are only estimates, as much depends on the patient's anatomical conditions, but also on the number of fittings.
Remember, too, that if you opt for this prosthetic solution you must take proper care of your oral hygiene and the prosthesis itself. In the text "How to care for dentures - 5 basic rules" you will find more information on this topic.
Pros and cons of acrylic dentures
The undoubted advantage of acrylic dentures in the UK is their price. It is currently the cheapest prosthetic restoration on the market. It is also a quick solution (compared to implants, for example) that provides the patient with an aesthetically pleasing appearance and restores chewing and biting function.
The big downside is that it is a foreign body in the mouth, which takes some getting used to. During chewing, it interacts with the gums, which causes pressure and faster bone atrophy. It is also not a very durable prosthetic solution, on average acrylic dentures need to be replaced every five years.
Therefore, a good solution may be flexible dentureswhich offer much greater comfort, are anti-allergenic and much more resistant to breakage.
