We know that fluoride is necessary - even essential! Why? It strengthens enamel, making our teeth less vulnerable to decay, for example. It also stimulates the formation of new bone tissue. Interestingly, it is not only found in products related to dental hygiene - it can also be found in drinking water or fish. If it has so many benefits, why is the presence of fluoride in toothpaste a cause for concern, and is it really harmful or not? So let's take a look at the facts and dispel any myths about fluoride.
What is fluoride?
But let's start with what exactly is fluoride? It is a chemical element that is present in many products. We have mentioned drinking water and fish - but you will find it not only there. Where else? Fluoride is in cheese, tea, leafy vegetables, nuts and cereal products.
So as you can see - we take in fluoride on a daily basis without even realising it. As we mentioned, fluoride has a positive effect on our health. However, you need to know to take it in the right amounts. But what does this mean? We explain further!
Fluoride in toothpaste - what are the facts?
As we mentioned, there are many myths surrounding fluoride - or rather its harmfulness. Rest assured that by using fluoride in toothpaste you are not exposing yourself to unpleasant health consequences. In order to overdose on fluoride, you would need to provide 5-10 grams of fluoride, whereas there is approximately 2.25 grams in the entire tube of toothpaste. Obviously, you do not use up the entire contents of the tube for a single brushing, plus you spit out most of the toothpaste rather than swallowing it.
However, this does not mean that an overdose of fluoride is not possible. It is - but by no means would it happen through dental hygiene products. Fluoride overdose (a.k.a. fluorosis) can occur through excessive consumption of products that are rich in fluoride.
Of course - it is not possible to control the amount of fluoride you take in every day. Nor is it so simple to supply yourself with enough of it to overdose. However, it is possible. So how do you recognise it?
What are the symptoms of a fluoride overdose?
The main symptoms of a fluoride overdose include lethargy, rhinitis, muscle and bone pain. Gingivitis, coughing and a general weakening of our body should also give us pause for thought. Damage to the liver and kidneys should also be mentioned.
Fluorosis can be prevented by moderation in the consumption of fluoride-rich products. With a varied diet, there is certainly no need to worry about this issue!
Fluoride in toothpaste - is it always safe?
The answer is yes! The fluoride content of the toothpaste is not so high that it has a harmful effect. The risk of complications is low, while the benefits of fluoridated toothpastes and mouthwashes are considerable. What, for example?
Fluoride in toothpaste has a beneficial effect on the condition of the of our enamel. Without this element, the enamel becomes weak and thin, so the condition of the teeth can deteriorate very quickly.
There is no scientific evidence that fluoride in toothpaste is harmful. You can therefore rest assured - any speculation on this issue is simply due to ignorance.
